Sage's Older People Work

Sage's Ageing Well project supports local initiatives that help older people by helping them to remain as independent as possible, as well as having the opportunity to learn.

Unless otherwise stated, all of the events and activities listed below are FREE. For further details contact Ros Spinks on 020 8461 4300.

Monday

Lunch Club at the Bellingham Community Centre. Transport is provided, so members can be collected from home, taken for lunch and returned home afterwards. Once at the Community Centre tea and biscuits are available and a seated exercise session is run by a qualified trainer. After lunch there is a raffle, chance for another cup of tea and a natter and then back home again - and all for just £4!

For those wanting to 'make some shapes' on the dance floor, Line Dancing takes place on Monday mornings at Bellingham North Community Centre.

Tuesday

Every Tuesday there is a shopping trip organised, to enable older people to carry on doing their shopping, thereby helping them to remain independent. Two groups go alternate weeks, being picked up from home, helped wherever necessary with their shopping and then returned home with all their goodies for the fortnight, having also had the opportunity for a chat with friends along the way.

Also on Tuesdays, is a seated exercise and falls prevention group for frailer older people, which meets at Grovehill Court, Swiftens Way from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

Wednesday

Knit and Natter. A chance to catch up with all the news, meet new people and make new friends, all over a ball of wool.

Every Wednesday there are also three exercise groups, two based at South Lewisham Health Centre and one at Downham Leisure Centre. These cater for 55+ year olds, with varying degrees of mobility.

Thursday

Two more exercise groups are run on Thursdays. One is in the morning, at South Lewisham Health Centre, for patients at the Centre, and another for over 55 year olds takes place at Wesley Halls in the afternoon.

Friday

The Evergreen Swim Group meets on Friday mornings at Bromley Pavilion. Transport to and from the Pavilion is provided and the group is open to older people with all levels of swimming ability.

Lunch Club, along the lines of Monday's Lunch Club, but on Fridays it's held at the Goldsmiths Community Centre. For just £5, there's a delicious, hot, 2 course meal, made on the premises. There are around 20 regular attendees, many of whom take advantage of the door to door transport service. As well as lunch, various different activities are arranged each week, such as bingo, card-making and craft projects, and there is a seated exercise/falls prevention group for frailer older people.
