Managing Behaviour
Behaviour, particularly during the lunchtime, raises many issues for both children and adults. Sage has supported local schools in developing innovative Behaviour Management Programmes, using a variety of methods such as training for meal time supervisors, teaching and non-teaching staff INSET and a range of therapeutic interventions for pupils.
In previous years all 16 primary schools have taken part in lunchtime audits of playground behaviour that have led to changes in the organisation of activities. This has resulted in a dramatic reduction in lunchtime incidents - with 50% less disruptive incidents reported in some schools. Schools have also received consultancy support and new playground equipment.
Sage also arranged training for Mealtime Supervisors in all 22 schools. This training, run by specialist trainers Ambit, looked at established good practice and stimulated debate on new ideas of how to improve behaviour and manage poor behaviour during the lunch break.
This Good Practice Sheet contains a range of ideas on managing behaviour in the lunchtime, ideas that can be adapted to suit the needs and challenges of different schools.
