Irresistible Reading

Sage is providing funding to Marvels Lane school to refurbish their wonderful 'Reading Shack'

The Reading Shack was an idea staff at Marvels Lane came up with to encourage children to read more, as Jane Denham from Marvels Lane explains ...

"The idea of creating a 'Reading Shack' came about from a desire to promote and encourage reading in our outdoor learning area. We wanted to provide an inviting and exciting space in which the children could access and enjoy books. We also wanted to raise the status of books and reading amongst the children in the Foundation Stage and Year 1.

We bought a shed and began furnishing it with a colourful rug, cushions, curtains, a sofa, shelves, beaded curtains and wind chimes; all of which were begged, borrowed and donated. We decorated the walls with colourful posters and added teddies and soft toys (also donated) for the children to read to. Most importantly, we invested in a collection of good quality books.

The 'Reading Shack' is now used on a daily basis by the children in Reception and Year 1. They use it independently during the day whenever the outdoor area is in use, it has proved to be so popular that we have had to make a rule about the number of children using it at one time. We are now considering further Reading Shacks for the nursery and Key Stage 2!
