Sage's commitment to 'Making Learning Irresistible' has been extended to include Irresistible Reading

As part of this programme schools were invited to participate in the Sage Irresistible Reading Challenge. The Challenge is now complete and schools have submitted information to Sage about their progress in the first round and Certificates were sent out to named pupils who had performed particularly well. The points earned by the children for their schools went towards book vouchers that were presented at the end of each individual schools’ challenge. Collaborative B schools took part in a grand finale quiz on 8 July. Four children from each school battled it out to be Sage Collaborative B Quiz champions. Read on to find out what happened in the Reading Challenge......

CHAPTER ONE

Literacy Co-ordinators from one collaborative identified four books to feature in the quiz. Each participating school was provided with three copies of each book per year 3, 4, 5 and 6 class. The texts were:

Each class in each participating school read one book per half term. At the end of the half term each year group was given 20 questions to answer. Each child’s correct answer earned an Irresistible Reading point for their school and the schools received book vouchers according to the amount of points achieved. Schools could then choose either to use the vouchers for the classes with the highest points or to allocate them to each class. In deciding which option to choose schools were reminded that the main focus of the quiz was to develop the children’s interest in books.

CHAPTER TWO - Collaborative Reading Challenge

All participating schools were invited to send two teams to their Collaborative Reading Challenge, which took place at the end of Spring term 2009. One team was from Year 3 / 4 and the other from Year 5 / 6. Each consisted of 4 children, one boy and one girl from each year group.

CHAPTER THREE - Sage Reading Champions League

The winning teams and runners up from each collaborative challenge were invited to take part in the Sage Reading Champions League, which was held towards the end of summer term 2009.

CHAPTER FOUR - Sage Top 10 Charts

Another element of the programme was the Sage Top 10 Book Charts.

Sage asked children to let us know what their favourite books are, to help us compile the Sage Top 10 Charts. This was done through a questionnaire and through pupils’ collaboratives. Children were also encouraged to let Sage have their comments on any new books they have read, so that the charts can be regularly reviewed. Children’s comments will also be posted on the Sage website for other children to see. All children completing the questionnaire and sending in comments earned Sage Irresistible Reading points.
