HASELTINE
Working towards a ‘Healthy Haseltine’ is
a major focus at Haseltine Primary School at the moment, as the
school hopes to achieve a Sportsmark Award. These awards are part
of a Government initiative and have been developed to recognise
quality physical education and sports provision in schools.
Haseltine has teamed up with local secondary school,
Prendergast, as part of the National PE and School Sport Professional
Development Programme and the two schools will be working together
to improve their sports provision. Haseltine staff are to receive
training through the scheme, to help them broaden their skills and
ensure that pupils receive a minimum of two hours of quality PE
per week.
As well as the five main areas of gym, games, dance,
swimming, outdoor activities and athletics, the school also hopes
to develop further links with local sports clubs, including Catford
Cycling Club and the Barbados Overseas Cricket Association. Talented
youngsters will be supported and encouraged; who knows, there may
be some Haseltine representatives in future Olympic Games! Gold
medals or not, the school aims to encourage a lifelong commitment
to sport amongst their pupils.
