Caribbean Hurricane Appeal Day
School
meals may still not be the most interesting meal of the day but
at Haseltine Primary the children have been looking at different
foods as part of their programme of healthy eating. Haseltine has
a great multi-cultural mix and parents have been coming into the
school to talk about the food eaten at home and share their ideas,
as well as delicious recipes.
This all went towards a very good cause in October
2004, when the school held a special day to raise money for the
Caribbean Hurricane Appeal. Several hundred pounds were raised for
the Red Cross appeal and probably a few extra pounds on waistlines
too! Everyone tucked into the delicious Caribbean food that was
prepared with the help of parents, governors, staff and children.
The children were encouraged to 'sing for their supper' as well,
being sponsored to learn and recite rhymes and sing Caribbean songs.
Food also featured highly in Black History Month,
when the school looked at different food, artefacts and heritage
from cultures around the world. One Year 6 class set up an entire
display around the food and culture of Dominica, which the rest
of the school was invited to visit and enjoy. Local people also
came into school to talk about their experiences of living in other
countries, such as the Caribbean and El Salvador.
